NJ Energy Code (484) 443-1010 Check

Risk of Failure

The 2018 IRC/IECC requires two tests at the end of the construction process:

  1. Mandatory blower door testing for building airtightness
  2. Mandatory duct leakage testing if any ducts are outside the thermal envelope

The building MUST PASS these tests before final occupancy approval can occur.

If a house fails one or both tests, remediation can be very expensive.  It might require the removal of drywall to access leakage points in hidden attics and exterior walls.

Steps to a Successful Project

Avoiding failures requires a systematic approach to residential projects that wasn't required before this testing became mandatory. Getting the details right up front can eliminate a lot of headaches, delays, and expense.
